Community Beautification

Downtown

We brought together public and private groups and individuals to install banners, benches, barrels and planters along Main Street and a perennial perennial gardengarden at the corner of Main Street and Central Street.  Partners in this effort were:

  • The Topsfield Recycling Committee who provided funds for the "furniture" - all made from recycled materials.
  • The Park and Cemetery Commissioners and the Trustees of Endowed Funds who approved use of the George Gould Town Trust Fund
  • The Park and Cemetery Department that helps maintain the barrels and planters.
  • Tom Beard, a local architect, who designed the banner brackets.
  • Lawton Welding who fabricated and donated the brackets.
  • Grace and Daniel Peabody and Maria Wheeler, local landscape designers who designed the garden.
  • The Bike Shop's Dave Smith who helped with the planning, planting and maintaining of the garden.
  • The Road Commissioners and the Highway Department who undertook the rehabilitation of the sidewalks, repainting of the crosswalks (to match the banners), installation of new street signs and the "heavy lifting" in the garden project.
  • The Topsfield Fair that has helped maintain the banners.
  • Topsfield Main Street fundraisers at annual Strawberry Festivals
  • Local businesses and residents who adopted planters.

Doors of Topsfield Holiday Contest

For the past 4 years residents and business owners have decorated their doors to celebrate the holiday season. Beginning in the Business Village and environs, the contest has spread to neighborhoods throughout town with the result that Topsfield boasts some spectacularly beautiful holiday decorations. Partnering in this effort are:

  • Local residents Pembroke Kyle and Sandra Rygiel who have organized, promoted and carried out this popular event.
  • Local garden clubs who contributed "judges" for the contest.
  • Jerry Seaman who photographed the doors.

Welcome to Topsfield Sign

We coordinated the effort to site a "Welcome to Topsfield" sign at the corner of Route 1 and South Main Street.  Participants in this project included:

  • The Massachusetts Department of Housing and Community Development who funded a Design Charrette where the idea was born.
  • The Essex Cooperative Society Board of Directors and Essex Co-op manager, Jack Denehy, who offered the location and donated materials.
  • DayDream Designs, chosen to design, construct and install the sign.
  • The Topsfield Chamber of Commerce, the Topsfield Fair/Essex Agricultural Society, Sovereign Bank and  Beverly National Bank, all of which made generous contributions.
  • The Park and Cemetery Commissioners and Trustees of Endowed Funds who authorized use of the Gould Park Trust Fund.
  • Maria Wheeler who designed the landscaping and Jason Wheeler who implemented the design as a Eagle Scout project.
  • The Highway Department personnel who volunteered time to prepare the site.
